THE ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCE

Startup Pirates is not an event. It is a whole experience for life.

In this one-week program, our pirates dive in the startup world and have the opportunity and the tools to develop a business idea from scratch.

But if you think Startup Pirates is only about developing one idea, think again. This is a whole experience, the ultimate entrepreneurship trial, the entrance to a unique and exclusive worldwide community of change-makers and the boost you've been waiting for.

We gather the most promising aspiring entrepreneurs and fearless experienced guests to share and learn together in a combination of workshops, mentoring, inspirational moments and some wild surprises.

This is not the place to be taught, is the place to learn!

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin

Rui Quinta

Speaker

Rui Quinta is a Communication Designer/Brand Strategist with the special focus of not being focused on anything in particular. Starting as a “classic” graphic designer he soon founded is own agency, learned about the importance of understanding the business perspective, developed interest in brand strategy and in the last years he’s been consciously applying some core “values” of what some people call “design thinking” after an intense experience at the D.School – Berlin. Basically, he loves to help people realize their beliefs, transform their motivations into images and feelings while bringing everyone into the design process. He’s not only applying what he has learned with client/agencies but also by putting in motion his own projects like “querescasarcomigo.com” or “toyno.com“.

Joana Branco Lopes

Mentor

The nonprofit sector has taught Joana how to make omelets without eggs, a great skill to have in times like this. She has been engaging with nonprofit, creating social value and impact since she was 14: volunteer in Cape Verde in 2008, where she lived without drinking water, nor eating eggs, master in Development Studies, co-founder of 4Change – a social impact consulting that started with no eggs, currently Board Chair of Associação Par – Respostas Sociais, a responsibility she regards as such enormous privilege and a place where every day she dreams about making more omelets, still without eggs. Joana laid an unusual path for her: she arrived at the entrepreneurship world through the social trends and approaches. Never worked for a profit company but actually helped creating a few. At Audax-IUL, Joana is the Local Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator Coordinator where she lost count of the projects that went through her eyes. She acknowledges the importance of technology for human development but she would like to meet fewer projects related to technological applications and instead to be presented more ideas on how to use natural resources sustainably – more sustainable food and biological eggs so she can continue cooking homemade omelets increasingly tasty! She is kind of a dreamer. She strongly believes in people and their infinite ability to overcome hurdles and to achieve goals. Only that can justify her enthusiasm for the creation of new ideas and projects with a strong social and environmental impact. And with no chicken harmed!

More recently, and a bit cooler, he won the European Commission’s 2012 audience award for European Young Innovator of the Year, from the European Comission. In 2012, Romão co-founded Wishareit, a social gifting platform that helps you find, recommend, give and receive the perfect gifts with your friends and family. Long story short, a place where you can avoid receiving cactuses as a gift and discover some pretty amazing stuff to ask your family for x-mas. He once pitched Wishareit dressed as a tiger and you can find him in some strange parties (sometimes as a tiger as well). He likes to perform ‘Ask me anything’ sessions.

Hello. I’m Pedro Moura, 36yr old, co-founder and C3PO (People, Product and Poetry) of Wishareit, an online platform to help everybody find, give and receive the best gifts with their close friends and family. I’ve already done quite a few things in my life. I worked for 14 years in IT Consultancy Services (Novabase), where I went from Jr Consultant to Head of Business Solutions, working directly with the CEO. In 2000/2 I created Colabore, a Startup who made a Collaborative University Management software, which didn’t make it. I took my degree in Computer Science Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico, during which I was elected president of AEIST (students board) and member of the School Executive Board as the students representative. It allowed me to precociously learn business and people management, politics and public speaking. And, above all, the importance of loving what you’re doing. Later I did a post-graduation in Sociology (Sustainability and Social Networks) in University of Évora. I’ve also done some amateur drama as an actor for 3 years, as well as some writing (two poetry books self-published, another one to go). I’m father of two beautiful and devilish girls. Basically I’m a curious, creative, chaotic, trustful and loving guy. Never stay quiet, or you’ll freeze.

Amalia Ghiban

Speaker

Everything around us, including ourselves, is made out of energy. At the core of any atom there is energy vibrating at a different frequency, and this for me is fascinating. The way we walk, the words we speak, the way we handle money, relationships, knowledge, life, anything we believe we own, is based on a constant flow of energy, and we are responsible for it. If it gets stuck or flows, we should be aware of how to manage it. I don´t want to talk to much about it, but more to show you how to see it , feel it and use it in your advantage.

Amália Ghiban

I have started my life journey 28 years ago. The first waters which I sailed were in Romania. I did not know back then I will become a pirate, so I was just splashing around in the comfortable “waters” of an economic faculty in Bucharest, trying out jobs in the banking or marketing areas. In 2008 I came to Portugal for internship, but the Ocean fascinated me so much that I am still here. Since 2010 I have dedicated myself to creating my own way. Passionate by personal development and inspired by people I co-founded Beautiful Individuals together with my very best friend, I went to India for 3 months, I took a course of coaching and participated in personal development conferences and retreats. 2012 has been the year when I started to make a living out of my life purpose as an International Life Coach, Facilitator and Trainer, and I am loving it !I have embarked now in a new ship, as part of the pirates crew, and I am looking forward to the adventures of discovering new pirates.

Davis Gouveia

A Captain, called Reid Hoffman, once sent a message in a bottle that said: “Entrepreneurship is when you throw yourself off a cliff and you assemble an airplane on the way down”. This is pirate’s spirit! Today I study this new kind of boats, airplanes! The impossible today is possible tomorrow, so stop reading this and become a pirate, let’s innovate the future!

João Remondes

I’m not your average marketing manager. I tried to be one, I was one but I was not happy. After working for 10 years in marketing, I found that you should do what you love, what drives you and what makes you, YOU. I do love brands, I truly love marketing, I really love (good) design and I love (passionate) people, to connect with them and feel something.  Now this is what I do: I work with brands (and people) to make them realize their full potential. I’m flying solo now, setting my own pace and working with the brands (and people) that truly believe in.

Lina Figueira

Ahoy Pirates! My name is Lina and during my life I’ve experienced different ways of learning and teaching. First as a primary teacher, a wonderful experience that teach me that in life, we should always make things with joy, passion, not being afraid to make it different, try new approaches, always learning, see the world colorful and most important always “keeping it simple”. Later on, as a consultant and trainer I use the same principles with adults, using creativity and innovation to solve problems and implement change. Recently, I´ve been feeling the call of social causes…and that´s what I want to focus on! I´m looking forward to meet the rest of the crew!! “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…”

Maria Luísa Caeiro

Born and raised in a scientific womb and ending with an art’s degree, is what I call having a pirate spirit! During my sailing into the art’s seas I have discovered my passion for creativity and knowledge, and most of all, made me understand the importance of communication. So now, I’m just trying to trade my “found treasures” for a ship that will lead me to new lands waiting to be discovered!

Mariana Cordeiro

An artist, a believer, an optimist, a dreamer. Constantly dreaming of new places, new ways of living, new people and new ways of being happy, I very rarely have my feet firmly planted on the ground and yet I truly believe in hard work, passion and never giving up. A lover of the arts in each one of their expressions, I believe life is better with little snippets of color provided by the greatest artists in the world and dream of a day when culture will be as important as economics, politics or religion. That’s the kind of society I want to live in.I’m an optimist at heart and think that we can change the world if we believe in it and embrace that as our mission. Being a pirate is nothing but a little step and yet so important to get it started.

Miguel Lemos

Ahoy matey! Me always felt a connection with the ocean and the adventurers, both real and fictional, that sailed across the seven seas. I admire those men who had the guts to get in some tiny wooden boats and face storms, diseases, natives and, of course, other gold, fame and glory seekers! I believe nowadays we need the same kind of boldness, strength and smartness that made Morgan, Black Beard or Drake famous pirates and corsairs. Not to board ships in pursuit of gold but to board the box-minds, to sink the top-bottom corporate logic, to fight for our own definition of success. Since I was a kid, I have guided my life by some of these principles and they have brought me to this amazing crew!
